IV Sedation Dentistry In Santa Rosa

IV sedation is a deeper, more reliable form of dental sedation delivered through a small line in your arm rather than a pill. You stay in a comfortable, sleep-like state for the whole appointment, you feel nothing, and most people remember nothing afterward. Dr. John Buzza has been providing sedation dentistry in Santa Rosa since 1997, and Buzza Dental Group is one of the very few practices in Sonoma County certified to provide true IV sedation.

If you have put off dental work for years because the thought of the chair makes your chest tighten, you are in good company. We see it every week, and nobody here is going to make you feel bad about it. You have already done the hard part by reading this far.

What is IV Sedation Dentistry?

IV sedation means the medication that relaxes you goes in through a small line in your arm or hand instead of being swallowed as a pill. Because it goes straight into your bloodstream, it works within a minute or two, and Dr. Buzza can adjust the level up or down during your appointment to keep you exactly where you need to be.

You are not unconscious the way you would be for surgery in a hospital. You are in a deeply relaxed, drowsy, sleep-like state. You can breathe on your own and respond if we ask you something, but you will not feel anxious, you will not feel the work being done, and the vast majority of our patients have no memory of the appointment at all. Most people describe it as closing their eyes and opening them again with everything finished.

IV Sedation Compared To The Other Options

“Sedation dentistry” gets used to describe several very different things, which is why it helps to see them side by side.

Option

How it's given

What it feels like

Best for

Nitrous oxide(Laughing Gas)

Breathed through a small mask

Light, floaty, wears off in minutes

Mild nerves, short appointments

Oral Sedation

A pill taken before your visit

Drowsy and calm, but the dose cannot be changed once taken

Moderate anxiety, routine treatment

IV Sedation

Through a small line in the arm or hand

A deep sleep-like state, adjustable throughout, usually no memory of the visit

Severe anxiety, long or complex treatment, several procedures in one visit

General Anesthesia

In a hospital or surgical center

Fully unconscious, breathing assisted

Rare cases, usually referred out

The practical difference is control. With a pill, you get one dose and everyone hopes it is the right one. With IV sedation, Dr. Buzza can respond to how you are actually doing, minute by minute, which is what makes it dependable for longer appointments and for patients whose anxiety runs deep.

Why Patients Come To DR. Buzza For IV Sedation

Sleep dentistry was not available in Santa Rosa until 1997, when Dr. Buzza began offering it to his own patients. He has been practicing here since 1983 and has spent the nearly 30 years since 1997 refining how sedation is delivered, monitored and paired with the kind of complex restorative work that makes it worth doing in the first place.

Certification and training. Dr. Buzza is a certified IV sedation dentist, and the clinical team is trained to monitor sedated patients throughout the appointment.
Nearly 30 years of sedation experience. This is not a service the practice added recently. It has been part of how we care for anxious patients since 1997.
Advanced restorative training. Dr. Buzza is a Distinguished Mentor at the Kois Center and has taught advanced cosmetic and reconstructive technique at the Pacific Aesthetic Continuum. Sedation is only useful if the dentistry done during it is excellent.
A team used to nervous patients. Our front office hears the same worries every day and knows how to answer them without making anyone feel foolish.

IS IV SEDATION SAFE?

Yes, for healthy patients under a trained, certified provider it has an excellent safety record. Here is what that looks like in practice at our office.

Before anything is scheduled, we review your full medical history, your current medications and any past reactions to anesthesia. Some conditions make IV sedation a poor fit, and we would rather find that out in a conversation than on the day. During your appointment, your blood pressure, heart rate and blood oxygen are monitored continuously, and a trained team member stays with you the entire time. Emergency medications and equipment are on hand, as required, though they are almost never needed.

IV sedation is usually not the right choice if you are pregnant, have certain heart or lung conditions, have sleep apnea that is not being treated, or take medications that interact with sedatives. Dr. Buzza will tell you plainly if it is not appropriate for you and will talk through the alternatives.

Who IV Sedation Helps Most

What to expect , start to finish

Before Your Appointment

You will come in for a consultation first. We will look at what needs doing, review your medical history and medications, and build a treatment plan, including what it will cost and how long it will take. If IV sedation is right for you, we will give you written instructions: generally no food or drink for a set number of hours beforehand, comfortable clothing with sleeves that move easily, and a responsible adult to drive you home and stay with you afterward.

The day of

About an hour before your appointment, you’ll take a prescribed sedative pill to help you settle in. Once you’re in the treatment room, Dr. Buzza places a small line in your arm or hand, and the medication starts working within a minute or two. Most patients remember a warm, drifting feeling and then nothing else until they are being helped to the car.

During treatment

You rest while the work gets done. Your vital signs are watched continuously and the sedation level is adjusted as needed. Because you are comfortable, Dr. Buzza can work steadily and complete far more in one visit than would be reasonable otherwise.

Afterward

You will feel groggy for the rest of the day, which is normal. Your driver takes you home, you rest, and you follow the written aftercare instructions for whatever treatment was done. Most patients are back to normal the next morning. We will call to check on you.

Can I really get years of work done in one visit?

Often, yes. That is one of the main reasons patients choose it. When you are comfortable and time is not being lost to breaks and rising anxiety, a long appointment becomes practical. We have patients who had avoided care for a decade walk out with everything addressed in a single day. Dr. Buzza will tell you honestly at your consultation what can safely be combined and what is better staged, since some treatment needs healing time between steps regardless of how comfortable you are.

What IV Sedation costs

IV sedation is priced separately from the dental treatment itself, and usually by the length of the appointment. Your consultation includes a written estimate covering both the sedation and the treatment, so there are no surprises.

Dental insurance sometimes covers sedation when it is medically necessary, and coverage varies widely between plans. We will check your benefits before you commit to anything. Patient financing is available if you would rather spread the cost out.

What Our patients say

"I have opted for sedation dentistry for numerous reasons. I love that he was warm and welcoming and explained what he saw in terms I understood and what a good plan of action is for what is going on. I did not feel judged or like a freak because of my phobias." — Marcia Caskey

Marcia Caskey

"Decided to go here as they offered sedation, and wasn't disappointed: understanding and good care helped me overcome my reluctance to visit, and now I'm a regular, and have had several quick, efficient and mostly pain-free procedures!"
